Wildlife Explorations

Today was day one of a exciting seven day project with 120 (yes that's right it's not a typo) year one children at Birkby Infant School, Huddersfield. We are exploring the drawing of a variety of wildlife animals hung loosely around the book 'The Leopards Drum', anda visit to the Yorkshire Wildlife Park. Today was very much a quickfire introduction. I worked with approximately 80 children in groups of 10. Each young artist was given a sock containing a small plastic animal and asked to initially draw it using only their sense of touch to explore its shape, texture and form. Following this initial exercise they were asked to remove the animal from the sock, and then make a second drawing. A few images of the process appear below - FL.
